TELSTRA, Optusnet and Vodafone Hutchison Australia have shown their eagerness to get on board the iPad bandwagon with confirmation they will soon stock the micro SIM card needed to connect the device to 3G mobile networks.

Some versions of Apple’s much-vaunted touchscreen computer will come unlocked and ready to go with any prepaid mobile broadband service, but users will be required to sign up with a provider that offers the soon-to-be-introduced micro SIM standard, which has a chip housing smaller than a regular SIM.

Australia 3rd highest number of zombie computers

The federal government has given the internet industry an operate-or-legislate ultimatum to identify “zombie” computers involved in cyber-crime.

The Internet Industry Association – whose members include major internet service providers Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, AAPT, Virgin and Hutchison 3G, as well as industry giants Facebook, Google and Microsoft – is preparing a voluntary industry code to come into force this year.

The move follows industry intelligence that Australia now hosts the world’s third-highest number of “zombie” computers infected with malicious software that can attack other PCs, send spam, store child pornography or steal the user’s identity.

3G “MiFi” – share via WiFi to multiple computers

It allows up to five devices to share the one 3G connection, such as notebooks, netbooks, PDAs, smartphones and gaming systems. It’s particularly interesting for people who have long hankered for an “internet-connected iPod Touch” but don’t want to buy into the iPhone with its associated voice plans and long term contracts. Now, with a MiFi stashed away in your backpack, you can have your iPod-touch connected to 3G — along with your laptop and any other WiFi devices you might carry with you.

NOTE: The Mi-Fi will work on Optus, Vodaphone and Virgin Mobile but is no good for Telstra Next G.

Fears Telstra to cut a sweetheart deal

Optus director of government and corporate affairs Maha Krishnapillai says he fears the government may pull back from its threat so as not to upset Telstra’s shareholders in an election year.

“Unfortunately the ETS has been Telstra’s get out of jail card,” Mr Krishnapillai told ABC Television tonight.

“We have a real fear that Telstra will simply cut a sweetheart deal with the government over the next two months.”
